UnScripted FAQ
(1) What is the point of this site?
To provide a curated list of common web services that can be used without Javascript.
Why? Because JavaScript is a complex and resource-intensive language, which may be impractical to run on old or limited hardware. JS is also a common vector for tracking/telemetry/malware. Restricting its use can have security/privacy advantages.
Additionally, some classic web browser software like Dillo, links, w3m, etc. that do not support JavaScript can continue to be used on the modern web, thanks to some of these services.
This site focuses primarily on small, independent, non-commercial alternatives to mainstream corporate services.
Many listings may just be a front-end for a commercial product, but these can still provide the user with an elevated level of separation and privacy over using the corporate site directly. If there is no such front-end available, then we may choose to exclude certain first-party sites which act in ways that harm the free and open web, even if they happen to work without JavaScript.
(2) What about self-hosted web services?
This site focuses only on publicly accessible web servers, which can be used with minimal skills and resources. Some of the sites listed here can also be self hosted, but purely self-hosted options with no publicly available instances/servers are out of scope.
(3) Why isn't there a 'News' category?
That can be a highly subjective and divisive topic, therefore this site chooses to refrain from promoting or endorsing any specific sources of that category.
(4) You missed site 'xyz', can you add it?
Please send any additions or corrections to 'alex(@)envs(.)net', if they fit into the scope of this site (see section 1), we will be happy to add them.
